English for Academic Publishing in the Saudi Context: A Review of Emerging Challenges, Evolving Opportunities, and Transformative Support Mechanisms for Postgraduate Researchers
Abstract
Academic English for Publication Purposes (AEPP) remains a critical challenge for many Saudi postgraduate learners due to various problems arising from linguistic, academic literacies, mentorship, and technological aspects. Linguistic and cultural constraints may pose barriers to non-native English-speaking researchers in meeting the requirements of high-impact journals. Moreover, conducting peer reviews would be challenging for such people, as they would lack access to mentorship or global connections in the research field. Collectively, these factors hinder their publication prospects, confidence in academia, and participation in international research. The review article aims to examine recent empirical and theoretical research on the difficulties and opportunities s for academic publishing in English-medium universities in Saudi Arabia. Drawing on the theories of Academic Literacies and ERPP, this review highlights the significance of creating an organized, coherent framework. Rather than fragmented workshops, postgraduate learners get continuous guidance and support in writing, writing centers, mentoring, and the use of AI tools. This review introduces a contextualized approach to English for academic purposes that aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to promote equitable participation and sustainable engagement in global knowledge production.
