Abstract

This paper explores how conceptual metaphors and discourse strategies are used in climate change communication, focusing on how state-run and market-oriented news outlets shape public understanding through metaphor. The study examines two major Chinese English-language newspapers: the state-run China Daily and the market-driven Sixth Tone. The analysis covers articles published between 2020 and 2022, a period marked by key events such as President Xi Jinping’s speech at the UN General Assembly and the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings highlight the metaphors each outlet uses to frame climate change and uncover the ideological influences that may shape public perceptions.
