Akureyri is nestled at the governor of Iceland's longest fjord, the 60km Eyjafjör?ur, which sits at the basis of snowcapped peaks. Trees and well-tended gardens belie the location, reasonable 100km south of the Arctic Circle.

Dominating the burgh from its hilltop position is Akureyri's church, Akureyrarkirkja. It was consecrated in 1940 and designed nearby Gu?jón Samúelsson, the same architect front-office looking for Reykjavík's momentous Hallgrímskirkja church. The alien looks like a stylised 1920s US skyscraper, while entrails is a big 3,200-pipe process and a series of rather untraditional reliefs of the autobiography of Christ.

Back 500m south, the assets of vine freshness on exhibition in Lystigar?urinn, the wonderful’s most northerly botanical garden, is astonishing bearing in mind its latitude. On the irascible of the gardens, Scandi-chic Café Björk offers a lunch buffet of soups and salads, and profuse visitors amble down Spitalavegur thoroughfare to reach unassuming Brynja, known across Iceland for some of the a-one ice cream in the hinterlands (the merciful to scrutinize is made with out, not cream; lead classic with vanilla, chocolate dip and your rare of nuts or candy sprinkles).
Alfresco cafe tables and souvenir shops activity the trite shopping uncover, Hafnarstrati, located in the heart of town. An obligatory facsimile troll and a stuffed frozen endure produce cheesy photo ops for willing tourists, but there are factual treasures to be inaugurate as well. At the Fold Anna cumulate (Hafnarstrati 100; 461-4120) staff can be seen knitting lopapeysur (traditional Icelandic woollen sweaters). Bumper bookstore Eymundsson stocks skilled pictorial tomes, while Geysir sells beautiful, locally-designed clothing, heady on the population motif.
